Recently, John MCCain had a closed door meeting with Hispanic leaders in Chicago. This meeting was not on his travel agenda. It did not produce a press release, as most anything he does would in an election cycle; and there was no media.

It is rumored that John McCain told this group that he supports comprehensive immigration reform, which is different from his stated policy in February - remember the I have learned my lesson pitch to conservatives?

Here is the deal - first off, “Hispanic leaders” are still Americans, and their desire to secure the border should be the same as anyone else’s. It sounds more like John McCain met with “immigration activists” or there would be no need for the closed doors. Secondly, John McCain may not have noticed the sweeping legislation in many states regarding illegal immigration or this kind of meeting would not have taken place.

The American people want a secure border and want the impetus for further illegal immigration to be halted. As far as reforming the immigration policies to allow more people to come in to work - I am all for that. The stipulation must be that the system is enforceable and enforced. Amnesty for those who are already in the US? Path to citizenship? I lean away from that, but my view is if you can show that the border is secure and that immigration reform is enforceable, I am open to discussing anything.

Senator McCain, you are just now beginning to garner the conservative voters to stand behind your campaign. Don’t abuse the privilege by not being forthcoming with us. I’d rather hear your very bad idea than to think you are trying to keep secrets from me.

Here is an eyewitness account.
